The Geelong Otway Region
Enjoy a bird watching trip to this special region of Australia which extends from the south of Melbourne to Geelong and through to Apollo Bay (map).This diverse region includes the Bellarine Peninsula, the Great Ocean Road heathlands, the Brisbane Ranges and the Otway Ranges (Otways). This region has records of over 300 bird species, making it one of the most prolific birding regions in Australia.
Geelong is the gateway to the region. The city is located on the picturesque Corio Bay. Getting to Geelong is easy.
- Geelong is located 75 kilometres south-west of Melbourne, and is an easy drive by car along the Princes Freeway.
- Trains from interstate capital cities arrive at Melbourne’s Southern Cross Station. Regular services for the one hour train journey connect Melbourne to Geelong.The VLine website provides timetables and further information.
- Melbourne Airport (Tullamarine) is a 55 minute drive from Geelong.
- Avalon Airport is a 30 minute drive. Hire cars and a shuttle service are available.
- Daily bus services arrive from interstate to Melbourne and connections to Geelong can be made via rail or connecting shuttle services.
- The Peninsula Searoad ferry provides a car and passenger service connecting the Mornington Peninsula to the Bellarine Peninsula. The service runs hourly from 7am to 6pm, everyday. Geelong is a 30 minute drive from the ferry terminal at Queenscliff.
