Birding trip report
Great Ocean Road and Otways
Friday 27th July, 2007
 |
Barry and Elliott looking for koalas in The Otways. We found several along the track, including one hanging on a branch about 3 metres above the road. |
Although it was quite damp (as you'd expect near rainforest), we had an interesting day investigating the sites along the Port Campbell coastline and the forests and waterfalls of The Otways. The large swells from Bass Strait filled the Blowhole and Thunder Cave with spray and deep booms as surging waves entered the caverns. The secretive Rufous Bristlebirds were heard calling in the nearby heathland.
The waterfalls of the Otways were impressive as the recent rains increased the flow over each precipice. Satin Bowerbirds were noted in many places along the roadsides.
Elliott (hailing from Georgia USA) and Jim (local) were interested in the history, farming practices and agroforestry of the district. In return, I was fascinated by Elliott's account of the harvesting and extracting maple syrup in the US forests. The conversation ranged widely, as both Jim and Elliott were well traveled and recountered many interesting tales.
We arrived back home at dusk, after a rewarding and stimulating day.
Thanks, Jim, for the complimentary testimonial (jpg 82kb) you sent.
Barry.
