Private birding trip report

Otway Ranges, Tuesday 25 March 2008

The Easter allowed a trip out to the Otways with the family. We were keen for a pleasant walk and were also on the lookout for any robin species that may have been starting to move through the Otway forest.

The walk began through majestic tall forest with an understorey of tree ferns. Lower Kalimna Falls was a beauitiful place for lunch, with the falls splashing into the pool and the majestic cavern behind the falls providing shelter and shade. The Upper Kalimna Falls were higher, but not as impressive. We saw many of the usual forest birds and were able to watch a Yellow-faced Honeyeater eating red berries from a Coprosma quadrifida (Prickly Currant) bush.

The sleepy koala in the Blue Gum was noted on the track back to the van.

On our way home, we were able to approach a large group of Gang-Gangs that were so busy feeding on Hawthorn berries that they hardly noticed us when we pulled up about 2 metres away.
