Birding trip report Otways Hinterland I had not seen many of these “girls” since old university days, but they still had the same sense of humour and were keen for a bit of fun. When the girls get together, it usually involved a fair amount of coffee drinking and bottles of wine, but today they were keen for an Otway hinterland adventure.
After picking up in Anglesea, we started through the lower hills and stopped off for a quick walk near Distillery Creek. It was fairly quiet in this area, but we saw Brown Thornbills, White-throated Treecreepers and Eastern Yellow Robins. The Crescent, White-naped and White-eared Honeyeaters were calling, but difficult to spot. We moved deeper into the Otway Ranges and completed a longer walk. Some of the group had walked the Overland Track, but others had rarely walked further than their local cafe or bar in recent times, and were less inspired by the hilly parts of the track. Recent rain had produced a colourful range of fungi and the creek was running freely instead of the trickle that had dribbled through a few months ago.
Birds were moving about and we noted Crimson Rosellas, King Parrots, White-browed Scrubwren and several honeyeaters. The picnic area proved to be the most productive site, with at least five Satin Bowerbirds overhead, Bassian Thrush, Grey Shrike-thrush, Red-browed Finch and Yellow Robins all coming close to inspect our group. The Superb Fairy-wrens were very friendly, with the brightly plumaged male bird sitting at the table with us and a female bird landing briefly on someone’s head! I dropped the girls back in Anglesea where the fire was going and the wine opened. It looked like there would be plenty of talk and laughter happening during the evening. Barry. |
